What is the French press?

The French press consists of a glass or stainless steel can, a metal screen and a piston. The process is simple: the ground coffee is covered with hot water, allowed to brew and then, by pressing the plunger, the grounds are separated from the beverage. The result is a strong, full-bodied and aromatic coffee.

Which coffee to choose for the French press?

To get a great result, it is important to choose not only quality coffee, but also the right grind. Coarse grinds are best for French presses - they ensure that the coffee is not over-extracted and the piston is not blocked.

Recommendations for choosing coffee:

  • Arabica coffee with fruity or chocolaty notes will give you a rich and balanced taste.
  • Single origin coffees (e.g, Ethiopia or Colombia) particularly excels in this method, because the French press allows you to savour the nuances.
  • Avoid very finely ground coffee (e.g. espresso grinds) as this can cause thickening in the drink and make the taste too bitter.

Classic recipe for French press

Ingredients (for 2 cups):

  • 30 g coarsely ground coffee (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 500 ml hot water (approx. 92-96°C)
  • French Press
  • Spoon and timer

Preparation steps:

  1. Preheat the press - rinse the can with hot water before cooking to maintain the temperature.
  2. Ground coffee - add coffee directly into the press canister.
  3. Pour water over the coffee - just enough water to cover the coffee at first. Wait 30 seconds - this will allow the coffee to "bloom" and release the aromas.
  4. Slowly and evenly pour in the remaining water, stirring with a spoon to blend the coffee mixture evenly.
  5. Put the plunger cap on, but don't press it yet.
  6. Allow to infuse for 4 minutes. If you want a stronger flavour, you can extend to 5 minutes.
  7. Press the plunger slowly and evenly to separate the thick solids from the drink.
  8. Pour into mugs and enjoy immediately.

Advantages of the French press

  • A complete taste experience - because no paper filter is used, oils and flavours remain in the drink.
  • Simple and long-lasting, the French press requires no electricity and lasts for years.
  • Suitable for different tastes - the proportions and infusion time allow you to adjust the intensity of the flavour.

A few more tips:

  • Use filtered water, as the quality of the water directly affects the taste of the coffee.
  • Do not leave the finished coffee in the press for a long time - this will make the taste too bitter.
  • Experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios to find the one that works best for you.

The French press is a great way to discover the richness and nuances of the world of coffee. It not only allows you to enjoy an authentic and high-quality beverage, but also gives coffee making a special sense of ritual. If you are really interested in coffee, the French press is sure to be one of your favourite tools on your way to the perfect cup.
